Ground Hog Day 2015

Happy Ground Hog Day.   Today in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania we learn when spring will arrive.   The ground hog, Punxsutawney Phil, will emerge from his burrow early this morning.    If it is cloudy, Phil will not see his shadow, and we will have an early spring.   However, if it is sunny and Phil sees his shadow, he will retreat into his burrow and we will have six more weeks of winter.

According to Wikipedia, Ground Day began as a Pennsylvania German custom in southeast and central Pennsylvania in the 18th and 19th centuries.    The origins of this day are in ancient European weather lore, wherein a badger or scared bear is the prognosticator as opposed to a ground hog.   We, the Colorado Traveling Ducks, are happy that we are watching for a ground hog today, and not a sacred bear, to emerge.   We wish you all a very Happy Ground Hog Day!
