Happy Easter 2015

Happy Easter

Happy Easter!  This is a wonderful holiday.  The Lord Jesus was crucified on Good Friday, and today he has risen to Heaven.  Jesus died for our sins.

Palm Sunday 2015 with the Colorado Traveling Ducks

Today is Palm Sunday.  This day commemorates Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem while riding a donkey.

Eastern tradition says a king riding on a donkey comes in peace and a king riding on a horse comes for war.  Jesus riding a donkey symbolized his coming in peace.

Today is the beginning of Holy Week.

The Colorado Traveling Ducks wish you a good Palm Sunday and a meaningful Holy Week.

Happy Mardi Gras 2015

Today is Mardi Gras.  We, the Colorado Traveling Ducks and our humans, wish you a very pleasant day.   According to Wikipedia, Mardi Gras meaning Fat Tuesday in English, refers to events of the Carnival celebrations, beginning on or after the Epiphany or King’s Day and culminating on the day before Ash Wednesday.  Mardi Gras is French for “Fat Tuesday”, reflecting the practice of the last night of eating richer, fatty foods before the ritual fasting of the Lenten season.

Popular practices on Mardi Gras include wearing masks and costumes, overturning social conventions, dancing, sports competitions, parades, debauchery, etc.   Similar expressions to Mardi Gras appear in other European languages sharing the Christian tradition, as it is associated with the religious requirement for confession before Lent begins.  In many areas, the term “Mardi Gras” has come to mean the whole period of activity related to the celebratory events, beyond just the single day.

Ground Hog Day 2015

Happy Ground Hog Day.   Today in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania we learn when spring will arrive.   The ground hog, Punxsutawney Phil, will emerge from his burrow early this morning.    If it is cloudy, Phil will not see his shadow, and we will have an early spring.   However, if it is sunny and Phil sees his shadow, he will retreat into his burrow and we will have six more weeks of winter.

According to Wikipedia, Ground Day began as a Pennsylvania German custom in southeast and central Pennsylvania in the 18th and 19th centuries.    The origins of this day are in ancient European weather lore, wherein a badger or scared bear is the prognosticator as opposed to a ground hog.   We, the Colorado Traveling Ducks, are happy that we are watching for a ground hog today, and not a sacred bear, to emerge.   We wish you all a very Happy Ground Hog Day!

Australia Day

Australia Day is the official national day of Australia. Celebrated annually on 26 January, it marks the anniversary of the 1788 arrival of the First Fleet of British Ships at Port Jackson, New South Wales, and raising of the Flag of Great Britain at that site by Governor Arthur Phillip. In contemporary Australia, celebrations reflect the diverse society and landscape of the nation, and are marked by community and family events, reflections on Australian history, official community awards, and citizenship ceremonies welcoming new immigrants into the Australian community.

This information came from Wikipedia.   We are telling you about Australia Day, because Zeb and Eider Duck heard the humans talking and we are going to Australia later this year.

Happy Martin Luther King, Jr. Day 2015

Today is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.   This American federal holiday, marking the birthday of the nonviolent civil rights  leader, is observed on the third Monday of January.  King’s actual birthday is January 15.   King was the chief spokesman for nonviolent activism in the civil rights movement, which successfully protested racial discrimination in federal and state law.    In 1983 President Ronald Reagan signed the holiday into law and it was first observed three yeas later.  It was officially observed in all 50 states for the first time in 2000.   We, the Colorado Traveling Ducks, like Dr. King’s emphasis on nonviolent activism.

We wish you all a very pleasant day today.

If you are near a television at midnight Eastern Standard Time, we hope you watch the ball drop in Times Square.   This, the 6th ball, debuted in 2009.   The ball begins 475 feet about the street.   Weighing 11,875 pounds, the ball is 12 feet in diameter, and contains 2500 crystals.   That is really big!

We will celebrate with friends, one of whom is hosting a party.  We will be careful and hope you will be careful also.   If you drink, please have a designated driver or call a taxi.   Have a good time today and remember the Colorado Traveling Ducks care about you.
