The Colorado Traveling and their humans wish you a Very Happy Valentine’s Day.
We love you all!
Last time we showed you some snow sculptures from Breckenridge, Colorado. My Alaska cousin, Eider Duck, sent us some photos of ice sculptures from the ice park in Fairbanks, Alaska. We think these pictures are really great.
This are carved from ice blocks from a pond in Fairbanks. The ice is so clear!
The first stage of ice carving is done with a chain saw. The final stages with small hand tools, some power tools, for the perfect final touches.
I, Zeb the Duck, and Soapy Smith Duck, went to Breckenridge, Colorado on Thursday to see the Budweiser International Snow Sculpture Championships.
We went last year also, but this is one of our favorite events to visit. We want to show you some of the snow sculptures we saw and admired. Team Mongolia made “Nomadic Culture”.
Mongolian herders roam from one place to another searching for high nutrient pasture land for the livestock. The Mongolians typically roam with carts and camels. Team Mongolia also sculpted “On the Way to the Dream”.
This illustrates the strength of nature shown by the thrusting natural wave powering the boat, captained by two indigenous people whose heritage and future wish is to preserve and sustain nature with the advances of new technology, demonstrating respect for the environment. Team Ukraine presented “Doves of Peace”.
Team Argentina created this sculpture “Don Quijote”.
Don Quiote is a novel by Miguel de Cervantes. This sculpture depicts Don Quijote on Roxinante, his trusty steed, with his loyal friend, Sancho Panza. Team USA West Virginia, gives us “The Bear and The Fish”.
This is a polar bear balancing on a rogue ice cube while carefully studying a playful trout. The trout was partially submersed under the water, with only his head and tail fin peaking out of the water. Team USA Alaska presents “Cabin Fever: the Mad Trapper and the River.
This was the winner of the Kid’s Choice voting. Team China entered “Winter Fishing”
People from Heze Nationality, one of the Chinese minority, residing in Northeastern China, live on fishing during the winter. They still continue this tradition. The first place sculpture was made by Team Lithuania.
The Wind of Eternal Change” focuses on water and the various forms of water. The constant change is emphasized, and depicts life itself arriving from water and the survival of Noah’s ark. Where will the wind of constant change lead this ark, our life, our humanity next?
We really liked this piece from Kaiser Permanente Health Care.
This is “Kids Interactive”. This piece gives kids, and ducks, the opportunity interact with the art, be safe and have fun. We saw these sculptures last Thursday and the judging was the previous Saturday. You can see that our Colorado skies are bright blue and very clear with intense sun. Of course, there was some melting. If you did not see the snow sculptures this year, we hope you visit Breckenridge next year between January 26 and February 7, 2016 to enjoy the snow. These sculptures are carved from block of snow, 10 feet by 10 feet and 12 feet tall. The snow blocks weigh about 20 tons. No power tools are allowed. These are great!
It is time to leave Mazatlan and return to Colorado. As the humans are packing, Zeb and Eider remember some of the great experiences in Mazatlan. This is the view from our room at Torres Mazatlan.
We are so close to the pool, hot tub, restaurant and beach. We loved the mariachis at our welcome party.
Some times we just relaxed by the pool, lounging, swimming and more lounging.
We were amazed by the variety of items in the market in Mazatlan. Everything from fresh meat
to colorful souvenirs is available.
The cathedrals were all beautiful, but this cathedral in Mazatlan is so close to the market.
We enjoyed walking around downtown Mazatlan. We loved all the beaches.
This one is on Stone Island. That was a great day. The tropical plants were a nice change for us. This sculptured tree was fun to sit on.
The flowering cactus was so pretty, also.
One day when we returned to our resort, this bride and groom were posing for wedding pictures.
We did enjoy our vacation, but the time has come for the sun to set on our time in Mazatlan.
We hope you visit Mazatlan soon.
Zeb and Eider Duck really loved the beaches of Mazatlan. Early in the morning we would walk on the beach with mom. One morning we met this brown bird.
Then we saw this black and white bird with a bright red beak.
Isn’t he so attractive? During the day, the beach venders were always ready to bring us some refreshments.
There were many opportunities for fun and rides at the beach. This banana boat is ready to take humans for a ride.
Another daring choice is parasailing.
The human wears the vest and the boat pulls the human while the parachute lifts him over the ocean. Too bad ducks can’t ride these. This person is finishing his ride.
The landing on the beach usually requires some assistance.
Mom’s favorite beach venders have so much silver jewelry.
She usually buys something from them. Usually more than one day of silver shopping. Of course, as the day ends and the sun sets, the sky turns brilliant orange and yellow. This display of colors was the result of clouds in the sky as the sun sets.
Wow! This is beautiful.
Zeb and Eider Duck, took a bus from our resort to town for dinner. We decided to dine at the crazy Senor Frog Restaurant. Boy, were we surprised—it was closed, but would open the next day. But we saw these frogs nearby. There are several official Senor Frog stores in Mazatlan.
We loved the frog statues.
The stuff inside was great also. Mom bought some pens and a souvenir license plate, but the outside frogs were so special.
If you have been to Mazatlan, or anywhere that has Senor Frog restaurants, you probably remember these frogs. If you have not been there yet, this is what you will see when you do go.
We ducks just loved the frogs and wanted you to see them also. They should make you smile today. They make us smile. However, you really should go into the stores to see all the super stuff they have.
Happy Ground Hog Day. Today in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania we learn when spring will arrive. The ground hog, Punxsutawney Phil, will emerge from his burrow early this morning. If it is cloudy, Phil will not see his shadow, and we will have an early spring. However, if it is sunny and Phil sees his shadow, he will retreat into his burrow and we will have six more weeks of winter.
According to Wikipedia, Ground Day began as a Pennsylvania German custom in southeast and central Pennsylvania in the 18th and 19th centuries. The origins of this day are in ancient European weather lore, wherein a badger or scared bear is the prognosticator as opposed to a ground hog. We, the Colorado Traveling Ducks, are happy that we are watching for a ground hog today, and not a sacred bear, to emerge. We wish you all a very Happy Ground Hog Day!
There are so options for dining in Mazatlan. Zeb and Eider Duck just want to mention a few of our favorites. For breakfast our humans usually ate in the resort restaurant.
The food is always good at our resorts, and we usually have an ocean view.
Walking down the streets of Mazatlan, you will encounter many restaurants. Many have outside dining available and some even have grills where you can watch the ribs and other items being prepared. One evening we went to Carlos and Lucia’s for dinner. Whenever our humans are in Mazatlan, they eat here. This was the first trip to Mazatlan for Zeb and Eider Duck. Carlos and Lucia are married. He is from Mexico and she is from Cuba. They both live in Mazatlan and run this restaurant.
They are both very friendly and treat everyone like family. The night we were there, they were having a large reception for their son. He was married that day. Lots of their friends and family were arriving. When we arrived Carlos greeted us at the entrance. All the food is excellent, but our humans always have Ropa Vieja, a Cuban dish. Some times it is shredded and perfectly seasoned beef and sometime it is pork. Tonight it was pork and delicious. Another favorite restaurant is La Casa Country.
Again, our humans always eat here during their time in Mazatlan. One visit Eider’s dad had steak and Zeb’s mom had fish. They said it was great. Next time both humans had ribs. Boy did they smell good. Humans said they were perfect! And ice cream for dessert. The last night the restaurant was expecting a large group to come soon. While we were eating, some of the waiters danced.
This restaurant advertises that the Old West influenced it. These waiters would have been great cowboys.
Most of the restaurants are in the Golden Zone tourist area of Mazatlan. Our resorts were north of town in a newer area. To get to the restaurants, we could take a taxi, but usually we just took the city bus. The bus stops in front of our resort and lets us off anywhere in the tourist area. Also, we can and did, take it to the market and cathedral area. If someone is not sure where to get off, if a polite request is made to the driver, he will usually tell you when you arrive at your stop. The bus is fun and you can ride for 10 pesos.
That is about 80 cents. We like Mazatlan and we like the bus. The driver and other passengers are always very nice to us.
Zeb and Eider are in Copala, Mexico. This small mountain village has 650 full time residents. Copala also has one of the prettiest churches of any Mexican village. This church was begun in 1748 and completed in 1775.
Let’s go inside.
We really like this church. Jesus on the cross is a vivid reminder of the Christian religion.
This depiction of Jesus with a crown of thorns is also an emotional reminder.
Outside the church, we liked this waterless fountain with the white goose.
Copala was founded in 1565 when the Spanish discovered silver. That was 450 years ago! The economy of Copala is based on tourism, mining and agriculture. Copala is also a National Historic Landmark in Mexico. Across from the church in the main plaza, we saw this pretty gazebo.
Of course, we ducks liked these chickens.
Today we saw these kids playing.
Sadly, silver shop was closed today.
We thought the mural on this building was very pretty.
Copala is about 50 kilometers from the beaches of Mazatlan. We liked this little town and we think you would like it also. When you are in Mazatlan, why not visit Copala?
Zeb and Eider visit a tequila factory in Mazatlan. We went to Onilikan today.
This factory and show room has so much stuff.
The agave is from the cactus plant and is the base for tequila. Onilikan uses this agave syrup with mangos to make a delicious beverage.
This Mazatlan Cocktail display caught our attention.
These bartenders were really friendly.
If you purchase some beverages, you may want some mole, salts and spices to enhance the drinks.
If you cannot decide which you prefer, perhaps you would like a souvenir bag with a variety of flavors.
You have a huge selection for your souvenirs, or perhaps to sample during your stay in Mazatlan.
Onilikan is in Mazatlan near the Playa Mazatlan hotel. This is a very convenient location in the tourist area of Mazatlan. For more information visit www.onilikan.com and also visit www.agavespirits.com You will be amazed at the variety of products.
However, we Colorado Traveling Ducks are not too sure about this flavorful combination.
What do you think about this one? You will enjoy a visit to Onilikan in Mazatlan.
