Cuba with Channel the Bear

I hope you remember my friend Channel, the cute little brown bear.   Last year Channel and I, Zeb the Duck, visited Cuba with our moms.   Channel’s mom was the tour guide for our group.   Channel and her mom were in Cuba again in January and they sent us some photos.

Channel is sitting on this chair at Las Terrazas, near Havana.

Las Terrazas is a perfect place to sit in the rocking chair.

Las Terrazas began in 1968 as a small ecological experiment and is now a recognized Biosphere Reserve. This is a tajona, or grinding stone,

and was used to grind coffee bean, also at Las Terrazas.

I liked this picture from Muraleando in Havana.

Two local artists, Manuel (Manolo) Diaz Baldrich and Ernesto Quirch Paz started teaching art in a school.   Soon there was a scheduling conflict and the artists began teaching outside on the street.   This area, Muraleando, is now a community development project.

This one is also great.   For more information about Muraleando, visit www.muraleando.org

Here they are at Hemmingway’s house, Finca Vigia, near Havana in the fishing village of Cojimar, the inspiration for the fishing village in The Old Man and the Sea.

I, Zeb the Duck, and Soapy Smith Duck, went to Breckenridge, Colorado on Thursday to see the Budweiser International Snow Sculpture Championships.

We went last year also, but this is one of our favorite events to visit.   We want to show you some of the snow sculptures we saw and admired.  Team Mongolia made “Nomadic Culture”.

Mongolian herders roam from one place to another searching for high nutrient pasture land for the livestock.  The Mongolians typically roam with carts and camels.   Team Mongolia also sculpted “On the Way to the Dream”.

The Wind of Eternal Change” focuses on water and the various forms of water.   The constant change is emphasized, and depicts life itself arriving from water and the survival of Noah’s ark.  Where will the wind of constant change lead this ark, our life, our humanity next?

We really liked this piece from Kaiser Permanente Health Care.

By Kaiser Permanente. Fun for kids and ducks!

This is “Kids Interactive”.  This piece gives kids, and ducks, the opportunity interact with the art, be safe and have fun.   We saw these sculptures last Thursday and the judging was the previous Saturday.   You can see that our Colorado skies are bright blue and very clear with intense sun.   Of course, there was some melting.   If you did not see the snow sculptures this year, we hope you visit Breckenridge next year between January 26 and February 7, 2016 to enjoy the snow.   These sculptures are carved from block of snow, 10 feet by 10 feet and 12 feet tall.  The snow blocks weigh about 20 tons.   No power tools are allowed.   These are great!

Memories of Mazatlan with Zeb and Eider Duck

It is time to leave Mazatlan and return to Colorado.   As the humans are packing, Zeb and Eider remember some of the great experiences in Mazatlan.   This is the view from our room at Torres Mazatlan.

We are so close to the pool, hot tub, restaurant and beach.     We loved the mariachis at our welcome party.

Zeb and Eider Duck on the beaches of Mazatlan, Mexico

Zeb and Eider Duck really loved the beaches of Mazatlan.   Early in the morning we would walk on the beach with mom.   One morning we met this brown bird.

There were many opportunities for fun and rides at the beach.   This banana boat is ready to take humans for a ride.

Senor Frog Stores in Mazatlan with Zeb and Eider Duck

Zeb and Eider Duck, took a bus from our resort to town for dinner. We decided to dine at the crazy Senor Frog Restaurant.  Boy, were we surprised—it was closed, but would open the next day.   But we saw these frogs nearby.   There are several official Senor Frog stores in Mazatlan.

Ground Hog Day 2015

Happy Ground Hog Day.   Today in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania we learn when spring will arrive.   The ground hog, Punxsutawney Phil, will emerge from his burrow early this morning.    If it is cloudy, Phil will not see his shadow, and we will have an early spring.   However, if it is sunny and Phil sees his shadow, he will retreat into his burrow and we will have six more weeks of winter.

According to Wikipedia, Ground Day began as a Pennsylvania German custom in southeast and central Pennsylvania in the 18th and 19th centuries.    The origins of this day are in ancient European weather lore, wherein a badger or scared bear is the prognosticator as opposed to a ground hog.   We, the Colorado Traveling Ducks, are happy that we are watching for a ground hog today, and not a sacred bear, to emerge.   We wish you all a very Happy Ground Hog Day!
